Context
We added document storage to the car's digital profile to keep insurance, inspection records, and other important documents in one place. For the business, this was a way to make the garage more valuable and encourage users to return.
Discovery
Discovery made one thing clear: manual data entry was a barrier. The app needed to extract document details automatically from a scan or photo.
To make recognition work, I first needed to understand which documents car owners actually upload. I focused on the key types: driver's licenses, insurance, certificates of title, and vehicle inspection records.

1. Recognition and autofill
I designed document recognition and automatic field population. Users only need to review the details and save the document.

2. Linking documents to a car
I designed a way to link a document to a specific car in the garage, extending the idea of a single digital record for each vehicle.

I also adapted the flow for documents that belong to the owner rather than a car. The data model supports both vehicle documents and personal documents.

3. Status and expiry dates
The expiry date appears directly on the document card, making its status easy to scan and helping users notice when renewal is approaching.

I chose the garage home screen as the entry point. Placing documents next to the car card reinforces the product's core idea: everything about a specific car, together in one digital record.

I added a quick way to share a document as an image or text.

Results
38% of users activated the feature by adding at least one document. After launch, we recorded a 1.8 percentage-point increase in retention.
